Get Reel on Climate Competition 2009
Meet the Get Reel on Climate Competition winning team!
"Les jeunes informés sur les changements climatiques" (YIPCC , or Young Informed People on Climate Change) was our amazing team from Québec City that represented Canada at the 2009 UNICEF Children's Climate Forum in Copenhagen (CCFC-09), Denmark. This was an important conference leading up to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 15).
The winning team or 4 students from le Petit Séminaire de Québec joined teams of other young people (aged 14-17) from 40 countries around the world with the goal of sharing ideas for dealing with the global challenge of climate change. At the end of the forum (November 28 – December 5), youth delegations created a joint statement which was presented to world leaders.
Here is the latest update from the team on their continuing work on climate change initiatives:
"We are planning a Climate Week at our school form March 15th to March 19th. Our team will organize activities during this week to promote and launch the campaign « Défi-climat », a national campaign that will encourage people to take green actions all 365 days of the year. Each day, there will be a special activity. For example, we have invited an expert to our school to speak to young people about climate change and how they can make a difference. We will also show a movie about climate change to raise awareness about the critical situation of the Earth. We will also make a presentation at which we will talk about our Copenhagen experience to the students at our school. During this week, we will also promote the campaign "Défi-Climat", and we will actively encourage people to pledge to reduce their GHG emissions through one simple gesture over the year. This could include walking to school or eating more local produce.
To promote this national campaign, we will also participate at a series of conferences that are being given by the organization "Pensons Climat" (Think Climate). We will present our observations and the 'lessons learned' from our experience at the Children's Climate Forum in Copenhagen and our current involvement in environmental projects.”
